Morocco Travel Guide: What to Know Before You Go

Whether you’re traveling for leisure or business, taking a trip to Morocco will take your breath away! It’s full of unique regions and cuisines with colorful cultures and people. If you’re planning a trip, always consider what might impact your overall experience.

Morocco Tourist Visa

Morocco is easy for visitors from the European Union, United States, or Canada. They really want people to visit there and generally take a more relaxed approach on this visa application; although lines could be long at customs.

Morocco’s currency

In Morocco, you’ll use their currency, the dirham, to purchase items and services. When you arrive in Morocco, it’s best to exchange some local currency before leaving the airport. Cash is king in Morocco! Try to break your dirhams down into smaller denominations so you can tip people (and pay for things) when no one has changed. Many vendors will refuse to give change, so smaller denominations work well.

Some of the nicer restaurants and hotels accept credit cards, but you may have trouble using American Express, Discover, or Visa. MasterCard and Visa are accepted more widely so you should consider having a backup card on hand.

Browsing prices in Morocco

You can get a good vacation in Morocco without breaking the bank. Many accommodations are reasonably priced, but eating out is an amazing way to really save your money. You might be surprised to see how affordable some of the meals can be in Morocco. A dinner for four with dessert was $70 for us in a touristy area, and that was surprising.

Medina is the ultimate online experience for entrepreneurs

A medina is a unique and fun experience when you visit Morocco. Haggling is not just part of the culture, but also a way to do things. Bargaining is an important part of the experience, so be prepared to haggle whenever you make a purchase. If you’re buying something more touristy that’s less likely you’ll be able to bargain down its price. It can be frustrating after spending some time doing this, but it’s just part of the culture.

Moroccan Language

Morocco is a popular country for travel, and most visitors speak French, Spanish, or English. You’ll find people with these languages within the tourism industry too. However, if you’re planning on doing a visit to Morocco and aren’t comfortable speaking these languages at all, it certainly helps if you know a little bit of that language.

Get around Morocco for cheap

Morocco has an extensive high-speed rail system. It also has regular bus transportation from one city to the next. It’s a massive nation, so getting from one place in Morocco to another can take a full day of travel. You can also fly between major cities in Morocco with relative ease.

Weather in Morocco

As soon as you step foot on Moroccan soil, the daily temperature swing from cold to warm will be a shock. Every region has its own weather, but Morocco can be hard to plan for because it gets chilly and hot quite frequently. While it is usually warm in the day, nighttime can get very cold. Prepare layers that can help regulate your body’s temperature with the unpredictable weather conditions.

We wanted to share some tips and tricks on how to stay connected while living in Morocco

We had no trouble staying connected in Morocco. We were able to connect to the WiFi anytime we needed it, including at restaurants and hotels. You might find the speeds a little bit slower than at home, but overall we did not have any issues getting online in Morocco. Cell service is not necessarily everywhere in Morocco, which can make things tricky for people fond of traveling out in the desert or mountains that don’t have coverage.

Morocco is among the safest countries to visit in Africa

If you’re planning a trip to Morocco and want to feel safe, be sure to take precautions. Like any other tourist destination, Morocco can experience high crime rates, especially in crowds. Female travelers should also take precaution as Moroccan culture is not as female-friendly. Maroc Mama is a great resource for women who want to visit, with lots of information about Morocco’s history, food and customs.

Morocco is a booming economy, so there are plenty of options for accommodations. You’ll find new hotels and resorts popping up all over the place. In the desert, you can sleep out in tents or camels. Our favorite Morocco accommodation is what we call the riad experience. Riads are found right across Morocco and have been turned into wonderful hotels with distinct characteristics that reflect their past lives as homes. Some are very basic while others can be quite luxurious.

A Morocco Tours has been captured

Many places include tours as part of their package, but Morocco is not one of them. In Morocco, we found it helpful to take a tour because it made getting around easier, especially in the medinas. We also used our tour guide for haggling and help with transportation if needed. If you’re planning a trip to Morocco, your Moroccan hotel can arrange for a tour guide for you.

Moroccan food and beverage is a place for the most enjoyable dining in the world.

The food in Morocco is diverse, which is rare in other countries. You’ll find all kinds of seafood dishes and other varieties, depending on where you’re located. The coastal cities will serve a lot of fish dishes, whereas the Plains will have more fresh fruit and vegetables. You’ll see those dishes on every menu, but there are so many different types of tajine that you can try.
